Back in 2014 I worked for DreamWorks on “Trollhunters”, the fantasy TV series created by Guillermo del Toro for Netflix. Still at the early stages of the pre-production, co-director Rodrigo Blaas gathered a small team of artists in order to start creating some proof of concept work on the CG characters and their animation, both technically and visually.

In charge of developing the main rig protoype, the goal was to achieve light character rigs with fast performance and intuitive for the animators, as well as easy to build. This prototype and the auto-rig tool for building it ended up being the template used for rigging most of the characters in the series. I tested the rig with early versions of the main characters, including Jim, Claire and Aaargh (featured in this video) but also had the chance to rig a more advanced version of Strickler, which happened to go through and it’s been used in production so far.

It was a pleasure to work with the designs created by Barcelona-based studio Headless ( which received the Annie Award for their work on TrollHunters) as well as with this particular  Aaargh model, beatifully done as usual by Juan Solís.
